I've been to Siena and I recently visited the Basilica of San Domenico.
I wandered to the building in respectful silence (I want to say, more respectful to the people in prayer to the building and its alleged 'landlord').
Anyway, I noticed a group accalcatasi frantically at a particular point of the church. Looking best I saw behind a chapel, complete with iron railings to keep them at arm's length. I then tried to figure out what it was, the obvious interest shown by these tourists and as a special fence surrounding the area. Mystery revealed: it was the case with the head S. Catherine . A true 'chic' of the relic, I have to admit ...
I give you now some information on the sacred head (source: http://www.caterinati.org/luoghi_reliquie.htm)
The head of St. Catherine is the most important relic, preserved in San Domenico. was detached from the body in 1831 at the behest of Pope Urban VI. In the cell of the saint are preserved also bag which held the head, the knob of his stick the saint and the leaning lamp often used (relics of the species 'osmosis', I would say).
For four years the head stays in a closet in the sacristy of the basilica, but then decided to make the right honors in May 1835 led a large procession officially rightful place in the head (which was evidently not the rest of the body, but the chapel built for that purpose).
is not everything, even his finger is stored in San Domenico, with whom he still gives his blessing to the Armed Forces at the international festivals in honor of the saint. Other relics are the
cords with which the holy self-discipline and bronze bust, which held his head for years. Here I quote the site as it is beautiful (!):
"This relic [the finger ], together with cords with which the cabinet and she used to discipline and Siena bronze bust for many years content and protected the head, is preserved in the casket placed in the right wall of the Basilica, case that has now been removed to make room for another, an artist created , the work of the Sienese Sandro Bagnoli, where they will be better placed the finger the other relics of the Holy , this achievement is due to the sensitivity shown by Dr. Laura Martin of the Superintendent of artistic and perseverance of the parish priest Father Scarciglia "
In a church Then there is the Venetian foot of the saint, while in the Cathedral of Siena there is a rib , but has been given (in a spirit of Christian charity, I would say) to a sanctuary in Belgium. That sanctuary for truth , had already possessed a holy relic of Catherine, a throws his shoulder . However, still missing the 'bigwig', or the head in 'bones and bones' of the saint. And so they "cut off the head of the bull", thinking to play well the overseers of the blessed in a small scale and using the wax. As it says on the site, and I quote: "[...] a wax head depicting Santa.
their goodness.
of things to say I have many, but I will be brief, leaving room for comments (I hope many). First, it is aesthetically hideous exposure of a head, especially because it is partially stripped and shows portions of the skin. On the "artistic sensitivity" of the superintendent of the cultural heritage of Siena I speak ...
Secondly, you can never be called 'tribal' the cults of the aborigines, when it advanced into the fantastic and the contemporary Western world we are wonderfully similar to the 'headhunters' in Africa? And then: paganism should not be kept out of the Catholic faith? In the Old and New Testament, to my knowledge, there can be never any call to the worship of idols (or 'pieces' of someone or something). Indeed, far from it.
As for the blessing of the armed forces, imparted with the 'sacred finger' of St. Catherine, I would say first that I'm curious to see this waving of fingers bitten off. And then I note that you are blessing ARMED FORCES, thereby protecting and glorifying the armies, weapons and their use (although in defense of a people). Therefore they are not only legitimate, but even 'reinforced' ideally through the divine protection given by the celebrants, ministers of religion. Frankly I have no time (nor desire) to find the appropriate New Testament passages, but I'm sure Jesus would not have been of the opinion that a sword was 'anointed' God, did not you think?
I appeal to the believers: ABSURD not find this way of living worship, above all, a cult whose exponent is Jesus Christ? Jesus Christ, whether or not there is an absolute figure, however, essential in the history of thought and ethics. And never, never, and would share all other amenities typical of Catholicism. No need to be experts orthodoxy to support what I'm saying. Among the rest I challenge anyone to argue otherwise.
However, the invitation that I address to the faithful is to "use your head" (possibly the your head and not that of the saints).
A hug.
Ps: thanks go to Francesca duty, which I actually did notice the roughness of the head exposed for public veneration. Hence the idea of \u200b\u200bposting on the blog. In addition, she always, I noted a strange phenomenon, she herself named 'relic by osmosis': anything that comes into contact with the holy person or with its organs is considered in turn 'Holy'. Panties are included. Or not?
